How to find a tennis partner in Mumbai

Mumbai has plenty of people who want to play tennis. The difficult part is finding someone whose level, location and weekly routine line up with yours. A useful search is narrower than “anyone free for tennis?” but not so narrow that no one can respond.

Start with the four details that decide whether a game happens

Write down your playing level, the areas you can realistically reach, the days and times you usually play, and the kind of session you want. Those details remove most avoidable back-and-forth.

For location, think in travel time rather than kilometres alone. A nearby court can still be impractical at rush hour. List two or three areas that fit your normal route, such as one near home and one near work or college.

  • Level: beginner, intermediate or advanced, plus a short description of your recent playing experience.
  • Location: neighbourhoods you can reach consistently, not the whole city.
  • Availability: specific recurring windows, such as Tuesday 7–9 pm or Sunday morning.
  • Format: rallying, drills, singles points, doubles practice or a scored match.

Describe your level in plain language

Labels mean different things to different players. Add one sentence that another player can recognise: “I can sustain a moderate rally and serve consistently, but I am new to match play” is more useful than “intermediate” alone.

Mention how recently you have played. A former competitive player returning after several years may need a different first session from someone currently competing every weekend, even if both have similar technique.

Search in a sensible radius

Begin close to the area where you actually want to play. If there is no suitable option, expand one variable at a time: first the time window, then the nearby area, then the preferred format. Changing everything at once makes it hard to judge whether the match is practical.

MatchUp can help you discover nearby racket-sport players using sport, level, location and availability. Results depend on the profiles and features available to your account, so treat the app as a focused starting point rather than a guarantee of local coverage.

Send a message that is easy to answer

A good first message proposes one concrete plan and leaves room for adjustment: “Hi, I’m an intermediate player in Worli. Would Saturday between 8 and 10 am work for a one-hour hit nearby?” The other player can accept, decline or suggest one change.

Avoid sending only “Want to play?” It forces the recipient to ask for every useful detail and makes the conversation easier to postpone.

Confirm before you travel

  • Agree on the venue, start time and session length.
  • Confirm who is booking and how the court cost will be handled.
  • Exchange a final confirmation on the day of the game.
  • Choose a public, staffed venue for a first meeting.
