How to keep playing with a busy schedule

Finding a partner is only half the job. The more common problem is finding the same usable hour in two busy weeks. The answer is not a perfect calendar; it is a small system that makes arranging the next game easier.

Separate recurring availability from one-off openings

Recurring windows are the backbone of a playing routine. One-off openings are useful extras. Tell potential partners which is which so they know whether a successful first game can become regular.

A profile that says “weekday evenings” is hard to act on. “Usually Tuesday or Thursday, 7–9 pm” gives another player something concrete to compare with their own schedule.

Choose a default session length

A planned 60-minute session is easier to fit around work than an open-ended afternoon. Include arrival and travel time when deciding whether a slot is genuinely available.

For table tennis, pickleball or badminton, a shorter session may still feel complete. Tennis and squash bookings can have fixed blocks, so check the venue format before proposing the plan.

Keep one backup window

When you propose a game, offer a primary window and one backup. Too many choices create calendar negotiation; no backup means one conflict ends the plan.

If weather affects an outdoor court, agree in advance whether you will reschedule, switch venue or wait for confirmation from the venue.

Create a simple confirmation rhythm

  • Agree on the plan before either person books.
  • Confirm again the day before if the booking is flexible.
  • Send a short same-day message before leaving.
  • If you need to cancel, say so as early as possible and suggest a new window.

Protect consistency, not perfection

A fortnightly game that actually happens is more valuable than an ambitious three-times-a-week plan that is constantly cancelled. Start with the smallest rhythm you can sustain.

MatchUp lets players use availability alongside sport, level and location when discovering potential partners. Availability and other features may vary by account, so confirm the current details directly in your conversation.
